Best Practice Update

A festive image showing the Elf on the Shelf character excitedly bursting out of a large black bag labeled "CONFIDENTIAL WASTE" in a hallway decorated for Christmas. Papers and documents are flying out of the bag and scattered across the floor, symbolizing a data breach or improper disposal. The top left corner features the logo for "Data Protection Education," and the text overlay asks: "Who has access to your confidential waste?"

Shareable Snippet: Confidential waste

We're sharing some small snippets over Christmas to share with staff.  Please feel free to share the link to this short news article or follow us over on our social media channels where we share additional help and advice - we'd love to see you there!

These shareable snippets are designed to help staff think about data and cyber security in preparation for the holidays, here's our short checklist for confidential waste:

🛡️Ensure all staff understand what constitutes confidential material.

🛡️If you're using confidential waste bags ensure they are locked away - who would have access to the bag when you are not there or even during the day?

🛡️Ensure general recycling and confidential waste are not stored together as it can cause confusion.

🛡️Use recommended destruction methods for confidential waste and maintain a certificate of destruction where necessary.

🛡️Ensure staff have access to lockable areas in their workspace if there is no shredder or confidential waste bin nearby.

🛡️ If non-employees enter your building during the holidays or when you are not there, ensure confidential data is locked away.

Remember confidential data does not stop being confidential when you no longer need it.
